PCSXR: PCSX Reloaded

I am happy to announce that their is an actively developed playstation emulator for Linux. This emulator is PCSXR. You can download it here. This emulator is currently in an alpha state so be warned. However I have tried it on my 64 bit Jaunty Jackalope Linux distro and it has been able to play the majority of my games perfectly. I have been able to play all of my Final Fantasy, Dino Crisis, Street Fighter, and Lunar games flawlessly on this emulator. I also think that the graphics on this emulator are superior to the graphical output displayed by the pSX emulator.

Linux SNES Emulation

Over the last few weeks I have been researching SNES emulators for Linux. I want to see which ones are in current development and which ones have ended. So far the only currently developed SNES emulator that I have been able to find is bsnes. BSNES is an emulator that is written in C++. It has ports for Windows, Mac, and Linux. BSNES works very well because it emulates the SNES hardware. The one thing that I thought was really remarkable about this emulator is that I could compile it natively for a 64 bit system. This is a big improvement over other Linux SNES emulators. The only other real competitor to bsnes is zsnes and zsnes can only work on a 64 bit system with the 32 bit compatibility libraries installed.

Is Playstation Emulation Dead?

I have to ask this question. Is playstation emulation dead? I currently have both a 32 bit version of Windows Vista and a 64 bit version of Ubuntu Linux. Just recently I decided to search the internet so that I could find the most upto date playstation emulator for either one of my operating systems. I first started to search for playstation emulators for my windows box. Almost all of the emulators that I ran across were not in active development. pSX, PSXeven, AndriPSX, PCSX, and SSSPSX are all pretty much dead projects now. The most recent emulator that I could find would probably have to be epsxe and that has not been actively updated for at least a year. The situation of playstation emulation is probably worse for a modern 64 bit Linux box. In one of my previous posts I gave instructions on how to install pSX on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 64 bit. However that version of Ubuntu has become outdated. I now run the latest version of Ubuntu: Jaunty Jackalope. Those instructions no longer apply. That means that pSX pretty much no longer works on a modern 64 bit Linux distribution.

This brings me to my next question. What is the future of playstation emulation? After having scanned the internet I have come to the conclusion that most playstation development is now being done on mobile devices. These mobile devices include smart phones and handheld game systems like the PSP. I have a playstation “emulator” for my own PSP. This emulator has probably received more updates in one month than epsxe has received in the last two years. Another idea for the future of playstation emulation is in playstation 2 emulation. Right now most of the emulators for playstation 2 are rather primitive so they will not have support for playstation right now. However after playstation 2 emulators mature and get beyond the point of just playing playstation 2 games I imagine many of the developers of these emulators will add some sort of playstation compatibility. The reason for this is because by having this feature built in these emulators will come closer to being a total system emulator. The playstation 2 system has the ability to play playstation one games. As of right now I know of no Playstation two emulator that can do this. All of the current playstation two emulators are just partial system emulators. When they have playstation one compatibility they will become total system emulators.

Back at home

Well I am back at home. School ended on May 13th for me. I am enjoying this vacation for now. However knowing myself this vacation will soon start to get boring for me. Oh well.

Update on Playstation Emulators for 64 bit Linux

I just tried the pSX for 64 bit Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex. If you want the premade binaries you have to go to this site. Then you have to scroll down to the 6th post (the one by dfreer) and download the binaries. I have found that if you turn of desktop effects you can get almost perfect Playstation emulation. Apparently the desktop effects were causing the problems before. With them turned off you should be able to play your game.

My Eyes

Just a few days ago someone threw a sleetball into my left eye. My eye was red afterwards. The following days it was also red. Just a few days after this event I visited the Student Health Services on Temple University to see if they could help me. They referred me to Wills Eye Hospital. At this hospital I was given two prescriptions to be put into my eye. These prescriptions make it almost impossible for me to read or write. My vision is just so blurry that I can not do this. I hope that my vision gets better soon.

No really good Playstation emulator for 64 bit Linux

The title pretty much says it all. I have not found a really good Playstation emulator for 64 bit Linux. Some of them like pSX and PCSXE actually run. However they do not run well. They have graphical glitches and they can not configure my controller correctly. Configuring the controller correctly is a big must for me. An emulator must be able to do that. If it can not then I will just try and find another emulator that will. pSX as of this point is the best Playstation emulator for 64 bit Linux. The only problem it has is that the screen keeps on blinking whenever I try to play a game. I say that pSX is the best emulator up to this point. Let me emphasize the “up to this point” part. pSX has not posted a new version for quite some time. I think that development for this emulator is currently dead. I know epsxe has been updated. However that was only for the 32 bit windows port. I have no idea as for PCSXE as to when the last version of that came out. Well that is all for now. Till next time.
